ARTIST’S STATEMENT

In 2008 I retired from a 40-year career in art direction which included long tenures at both the Boston Globe and Newsweek Magazine. My professional career hinged entirely on the use of visual information to tell a story. During the last 11 years, that goal has barely changed, but instead of educating myself as a journalist, I’ve studied drawing and painting to communicate more effectively the narratives of my own experience.

After five years of learning to draw the figure, I added the variable of color and started to paint, a process I’ve likened to playing 3-dimensional chess. The results of my efforts are shown on this site. Most of the figurative work was produced in Sharon Sprung’s daily class at the Art Students League in New York City. Many landscapes were done in Italy at the Jerusalem Studio School under the guidance of Israel Hershberg, Yael Scalia, and others. I’m fortunate to have a small studio in Harlem, where I’m able to develop my ideas beyond the discipline of the classroom.

Many pieces are held in private collections, and I also work on commission. To learn more about my work or inquire about purchasing or commissioning a piece, I invite you to contact me directly using the form below.

I'd be delighted to hear from you.
